IELTS Writing Mark Distribution

Writing is different from Listening and Reading because there are no 40 individual questions.

The Writing test contains:

Task 2 requires an essay.

General Training Writing

In General Training IELTS:

Task 1 is a letter.
Task 2 is an essay.

IELTS Speaking Mark Distribution

Speaking is assessed by an examiner using four criteria:

Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Pronunciation

Each criterion has equal weighting, and the average contributes to the Speaking band score.

The Speaking test consists of three parts:

Part 1

Introduction and interview based on familiar topics.

Part 2

A longer individual response based on a task card.

Part 3

A discussion that develops ideas related to the Part 2 topic.

How IELTS Overall Band Score Is Calculated

Your four section scores are averaged to produce the overall band score. IELTS reports scores in whole or half bands.

For example:

Listening: 7.0
Reading: 6.5
Writing: 6.5
Speaking: 7.0

Average:

(7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.75

This is reported as an overall Band 7.0 according to IELTS rounding conventions.
