Mastering IELTS Writing Task 1 is crucial for achieving your target band score. This section requires you to either describe visual data (Academic module) or write a letter (General Training module) in at least 150 words. The key is to understand the structure and use appropriate language to effectively communicate the information.
At Banglay IELTS, founded by Rashed Hossain, we provide Bangladeshi students with the practical strategies and personalized feedback needed to excel in this part of the exam. This guide provides sample answers and tips to help you write a high-scoring response.
What are the Two Types of IELTS Writing Task 1?
The task you receive depends on the IELTS module you are taking:
- Academic: You will be presented with a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram. Your task is to summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and making comparisons where relevant.
- General Training: You will be given a situation and asked to write a letter in response. The letter can be formal, semi-formal, or informal, depending on the recipient.
Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Answer (Line Graph)
Question: The line graph below shows the amount of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:
The provided line graph illustrates the quantity of goods transported within the UK, measured in million tonnes, across four categories: road, water, rail, and pipeline, over a 28-year period from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, road transport consistently carried the largest volume of goods, showing a significant increase over the period. Conversely, the amount of goods transported by rail and water fluctuated, while the volume carried by pipelines remained the lowest.
In 1974, road transport was the most popular method, starting at around 70 million tonnes and rising steadily to its peak of approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002. In contrast, the volume of goods moved by rail remained relatively stable, beginning at just over 40 million tonnes and ending the period at a similar level. Water transport began at around 60 million tonnes but saw a sharp decline to its lowest point of just under 20 million tonnes in the mid-1980s before recovering to finish at around 60 million tonnes by 2002. Finally, the amount of goods transported via pipeline experienced a slight increase from 5 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes by the end of the period, making it the least-used method of transport.
General Training Writing Task 1: Sample Answer (Letter)
Question: You recently stayed in a hotel and left some important documents in your room. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:
- Describe the documents you lost.
- Explain where and when you think you lost them.
- Tell the manager what you would like them to do.
Sample Answer:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you regarding some important documents I believe I left behind in my room at your hotel. I was a guest in room 305 from August 5th to August 8th.
The documents were in a brown leather folder. Inside, there were several business contracts and my personal passport. These documents are extremely important for a project I am currently working on, and my passport is required for my upcoming travel plans.
I believe I left the folder on the desk in the room on the morning of my departure, August 8th. I was in a hurry to catch my flight and did not check the room thoroughly before leaving.
I would be grateful if you could check for the folder and, if it is found, please contact me immediately. I would be happy to arrange for a courier to pick it up at your earliest convenience, or I can collect it in person if it is not possible to send it by post.
Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Rashed Hossain

How many words do I need to write for Writing Task 1?

Should I include my own opinion in Writing Task 1?
