IELTS Writing Task 1 is a critical component of the exam, assessing your ability to present information clearly and accurately within a short time limit. For many Bangladeshi students, knowing how to structure and write a high-scoring response is the key to success. At Banglay IELTS, we believe in providing practical, real-world examples to help you prepare.
This guide will show you high-scoring IELTS Task 1 writing samples for both the Academic and General Training tests, along with expert tips on how to achieve a band 7 or higher.
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Sample
In the Academic test, you are required to describe visual information such as a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram. Your task is to summarize the main trends, compare data, and highlight key features in at least 150 words.
Sample Question: The chart below shows the number of people who visited museums and art galleries in three different years in the UK.
Sample Answer (Band 8):
The bar chart illustrates the number of visitors to museums and art galleries in the UK over three distinct periods: 1995, 2005, and 2015.
Overall, it is clear that while museum attendance consistently increased, the number of people visiting art galleries experienced a decline before recovering. In all three years, museums attracted a significantly larger audience than art galleries.
In 1995, museums welcomed just over 60 million visitors, a figure which saw a steady rise to approximately 75 million in 2005 and peaked at around 90 million in 2015. In contrast, art galleries started with about 45 million visitors in 1995, and this number fell to just under 30 million a decade later. However, by 2015, the number of visitors rebounded, reaching almost 50 million.
Throughout the period, the highest attendance was recorded for museums in 2015, with 90 million visitors, whereas the lowest was for art galleries in 2005, at just below 30 million.
IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Sample
For the General Training test, you must write a letter in response to a given situation. The letter can be formal, semi-formal, or informal, and you must cover all the bullet points in the prompt.
Sample Question: You recently stayed in a hotel and were very unhappy with the service. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:
- Describe the problem you faced.
- Explain how it affected you.
- Suggest what the manager should do.
Sample Answer (Band 8):
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received during my stay at your hotel from September 1st to 3rd, 2025. I booked a double room under the name of Rashed Hossain.
The main problem I encountered was the lack of cleanliness in my room. Upon arrival, I found that the sheets were stained, and the bathroom had not been properly cleaned. Furthermore, the air conditioning unit was not working, making the room very uncomfortable. Despite calling the reception three times to report these issues, no one came to fix them.
These problems severely affected my stay and ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend. The inability to sleep comfortably and the general unhygienic conditions made me consider checking out early.
To resolve this matter, I would appreciate a full refund of my stay. I believe this would be a fair resolution given the subpar service and conditions I experienced. I trust you will take my complaint seriously and take the necessary steps to improve your service.
Yours faithfully,
Rashed Hossain
Frequently Asked QuestionsÂ
What is the word limit for IELTS Writing Task 1?
The minimum word count is 150 words. You will be penalized if you write fewer than this. There is no maximum limit, but it’s recommended to aim for around 170-190 words to ensure you have enough detail without writing too much and making mistakes.
Do I need a conclusion in my Task 1 essay or letter?
No, you do not need a conclusion. For the Academic report, your overview paragraph should act as the summary of the main features. For the General Training letter, you should summarize your purpose in the final paragraph before the sign-off.
Is it important to mention numbers and data in my Task 1 report?
Yes, it is very important. To get a high score, you must support the trends and key features you describe with accurate data from the graph or chart.
