IELTS Band Score Calculator: Your Complete Guide

Understanding your IELTS score is essential for anyone preparing for the exam, especially for students in Bangladesh aiming for higher education or immigration. Knowing exactly how your performance in each section translates to an overall score helps you set a clear target. A proper IELTS band score calculator isn’t a digital tool, but a clear understanding of the scoring system itself.

At Banglay IELTS, founded by Rashed Hossain, we believe in providing a transparent and practical approach to IELTS preparation. This guide will help you understand how your scores are calculated so you can better track your progress and achieve your goals.

How Do I Calculate My IELTS Overall Band Score?

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your scores from the four test sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The final score is rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

  • If the average ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5).
  • If the average ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0).
  • If the average ends in .125 or .375, it is rounded down to the next half or whole band.

For example, if your scores are:

  • Listening: 7.5
  • Reading: 6.5
  • Writing: 6.0
  • Speaking: 7.0

The total is 7.5+6.5+6.0+7.0=27.0. The average is 27.0÷4=6.75. This is rounded up to a final Overall Band Score of 7.0.

How Are Individual IELTS Section Scores Calculated?

Each section has its own scoring method before being averaged for the overall band.

IELTS Listening Score Calculator

The IELTS Listening score calculator is based on your raw score out of 40 questions. Here’s a general conversion table:

Raw Score (out of 40) Band Score
39–40 9
37–38 8.5
35–36 8
32–34 7.5
30–31 7
26–29 6.5
23–25 6
19–22 5.5
15–18 5

IELTS Reading Score Calculator

The IELTS Reading score calculator also uses a raw score out of 40. The conversion charts for Academic and General Training are slightly different due to the varying text complexity.

Academic Reading

  • Band 9: 39–40 correct answers
  • Band 8: 35–36 correct answers
  • Band 7: 30–32 correct answers

General Training Reading

  • Band 9: 40 correct answers
  • Band 8: 37–38 correct answers
  • Band 7: 34–35 correct answers

IELTS Writing and Speaking Score Calculation

For Writing and Speaking, there is no raw score. Examiners use a detailed scoring rubric to assess your performance across four criteria for each section:

  • Writing: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
  • Speaking: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation.

Each criterion is evaluated on a 9-band scale, and the average of these scores determines your final band for that section.

FAQ

How is my overall IELTS band score calculated?

Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your scores from the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The final score is rounded to the nearest half or whole band. For example, an average of 6.75 is rounded up to 7.0, and an average of 6.25 is rounded up to 6.5.

How is my IELTS Listening score determined?

The IELTS Listening score is based on a raw score, which is the number of correct answers you get out of 40. This raw score is then converted to a band score on the 9-band scale. For instance, you generally need 30-31 correct answers for a Band 7.0 and 39-40 correct answers for a Band 9.0.

Is the IELTS Reading score calculation the same for Academic and General Training tests?

No, the conversion is slightly different for the Academic and General Training tests. Because the reading passages for General Training are generally considered less complex, you typically need to get a higher number of correct answers to achieve the same band score as in the Academic test.

How are the IELTS Writing and Speaking scores calculated?

Unlike Listening and Reading, Writing and Speaking scores are not based on a raw score. Examiners use a detailed scoring rubric to evaluate your performance across four criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The average of these criteria determines your final score for each section.
