IELTS Academic Reading Score: Your Guide to a High Band Score

For many Bangladeshi students, the IELTS Academic Reading score can be a major factor in securing admission to a top university abroad. Achieving a high score in this section is a key step towards a high overall band score. But how exactly is your IELTS Academic Reading score calculated, and what does it take to reach your target?

At Banglay IELTS, led by founder Rashed Hossain, we help students in Bangladesh master the strategies needed to succeed in the IELTS Reading test. This guide will demystify the scoring system and provide you with actionable tips to boost your performance.

How is the IELTS Academic Reading Score Calculated?

Your IELTS Academic Reading score is based on the number of correct answers you get out of 40 questions. Each correct answer is worth one mark. There are no negative marks for incorrect answers, so it’s always best to attempt every question. The total number of correct answers (your “raw score”) is then converted into a band score ranging from 1 to 9.

Unlike the General Training Reading test, the Academic Reading test requires a slightly higher raw score for the same band because the texts are more complex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good score in IELTS Academic Reading?

A good score in IELTS Academic Reading is typically a Band 6.5 or higher. Many universities require a minimum of Band 6.0, while top institutions often look for a Band 7.0 or 7.5.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic Reading and General Training Reading?

While both tests have 40 questions, the texts in the Academic Reading section are longer, more complex, and taken from academic sources like journals and research papers. The General Training texts are shorter and based on everyday situations, such as notices, advertisements, and company handbooks. The score conversion is different for both modules.

How can I improve my IELTS Academic Reading score?

To improve your score, focus on these key strategies:

  • Time Management: Practice completing each of the three passages within 20 minutes.
  • Vocabulary Building: Read a wide range of academic articles to expand your vocabulary and recognize synonyms and paraphrasing.
  • Question Analysis: Learn to identify different question types (e.g., True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings) and the specific skills they test.
  • Skimming and Scanning: Master the techniques of skimming (reading for general idea) and scanning (searching for specific details) to find answers quickly.
