An IELTS score is a numerical value from 0 to 9, which represents your English language proficiency. You receive a band score for each of the four sections, and these are then averaged to determine your overall band score.
How is the Overall IELTS Band Score Calculated?
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your individual scores from the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections. This average is then rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
The formula is simple:
(Listening Score + Reading Score + Writing Score + Speaking Score) / 4 = Overall Band Score
What are the rounding rules for IELTS scores?
- If the average ends in .25, it’s rounded up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5).
- If the average ends in .75, it’s rounded up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0).
For example, if you score:
- Listening: 7.0
- Reading: 6.5
- Writing: 6.0
- Speaking: 7.0
Your average would be (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) / 4 = 6.625. Following the rounding rules, your final overall band score would be 6.5.
IELTS Listening and Reading Score Calculation
For the Listening and Reading sections, your band score is based on the number of correct answers you get out of 40 questions. Each correct answer is worth one point. The raw score (out of 40) is then converted to a band score from 1 to 9 using a conversion table.
- Listening: This conversion is the same for both Academic and General Training tests.
- Reading: The conversion table for Academic Reading and General Training Reading is different, as the texts vary in difficulty.
IELTS Writing and Speaking Score Calculation
The Writing and Speaking sections are graded by certified examiners based on detailed band descriptors. Your score is not based on a number of correct answers but rather on your performance across several criteria.
- IELTS Writing is assessed on:
- Task Achievement (for Task 1) and Task Response (for Task 2)
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- (Task 2 is weighted more heavily than Task 1)
- IELTS Speaking is assessed on:
- Fluency and Coherence
